No reason to go downtown

I'm listening to Dan Diorio and Greg Batten on WMBD 1470. They are bemoaning the loss of a handful of downtown restaurants and bars this week. The concensus is that there are a few destination businesses downtown, but no reason to just walk around and shop. DiOrio is suggestign the city get "off the backs" of would-be businesses, perhaps changing the building codes to let the owners of small businesses live in the places they work, just like they did in the old days.

Yes, that's what DPZ's Heart of Peoria Plan said, too. Is anyone at City Hall listening? Oh yeah, I forgot, the Heart of Peoria Commission is still "appreciating the complexity" of the project.

We need more retail businesses to locate in our central business district downtown. If "outside is in style," as Grand Prairie advertises, why can't it be downtown on a real main street instead of a faux "main street" on the fringe of town?

Cullinan does not want to build downtown. The City Council happily obliged them.

Until someone gets some nerve to say 'NO' and create disincentives to build on the periphery, the Heart of Peoria will not develop like ... well like the city of Peoria wants.

One disincentive would be to exempt farmers from property tax if the land stays agricultural.
